Hard Brexit threatens to cripple UK research, scientists warn

The sheer snobbery of some of these comments is incredible. I have a master's and I am currently working in an important STEM field, and my good friend is finishing up his PhD in a similar field at one of the Russell Group universities. We both voted to leave the EU.

Opening up academic scholarships to more students from outside of the EU is a great positive step forward. Why should students from already wealthy countries have an unfair advantage over equally talented students from, let's say, Mexico?

There will always be short-term negative repercussions when undertaking such a monumental change. We knew this. Everybody knew this. Remaining EU member states are not suddenly going to stop collaborating or sharing scientific knowledge with one of their single greatest allies and trading partners.
