Is it hard to get hvac certified

I would answer anyone can. Don’t hold yourself back and limit yourself based on what you can do. HVAC is a hard career but it’s equally rewarding and definitely worth the struggle. If you really want to do this then let everyone know and build a support circle. Women can do this!

I’m a female technician who just got promoted to a lead technician and I do system installs. I went to school in 2015 but never used my training until 2022. As a woman the program was tough but I had a bit of a background in electrical which helped a lot. You need to have a passion to learn and get excited about things like troubleshooting a electrical circuit or brazing in a Air handler.

I’ve learned a lot. The first thing is get used to being around men and working with them. I’d also suggest working for a company that is reputable and has a good HR department. Men are different on the job site and don’t tell you things other women would. Like where a bathroom is or to remember to bring a water cooler. Guys are nice or they can be aggressive and mean. Don’t take it personally and remember humor is helpful.

Also remember mistakes are the most important learning lesson. I caught a inside of a wall on fire brazing in a wall mounted air handler. I also cut my hand up bad. We work in hot attics and crawl spaces with bugs and get super dirty. I don’t wear makeup. I am sweaty and nasty all the time. My hands are stained with dirt. Usually we don’t have access to toilets unless we ask the customers or use a restroom in a commercial office.

I have a family and the company I work for is my dream company. We work 7 am to 3 pm most days overtime is common but not to bad. I have a good family/ work balance. The pay is great 40k + a year and benefits. Saving up to buy my dream SUV.

The awesome thing about construction jobs for women is that there is usually no gender pay gaps. Meaning women pretty much make what guys make. But be ready to move heavy ass equipment all day. I don’t want to sugar coat things but I also want you to know how rewarding this is. Women can do this and if your heart is in it please go for it and do it!
