Harry Potter is pretty much just a ripoff of the Star Wars original trilogy, retold. And both of them are pretty much re-tellings of the King Arthur legend.

This is the Hero's Journey, or the Home > Out > Home plot line format of MANY AND MANY of movies. It's also the best way of making a movie, since movies should have a rewarding ending where they usually "live happily ever after", and the Hero usually does that when returning from a battle or something like that.

If you start watching a lot of movies that were made in the 70's and 80's, you will see the same exact plot line formats in like 70% of them. Usually with a magical / important item, a mentor-like guidance and a rag-tag group of bandits or friends that help lead the Hero to his destination.

It's the exact same format in LotR, Tron, Narnia and a bunch of the superhero movies.
