He probably wouldn't have if they hadn't worked so hard on it. Also, there was a lot of sympathy because of his mom. I think people wanted to see him be ok.

I was never particularly interested in them, but they did feature on the front of grocery store tabloids for many years here in the US. And the princes were often in the teen magazines as heart throbs. Particularly William. I never thought he was that cute. And when Diana died I remember one of my friend's acting super shocked and at the time I didn't really get why she cared. We're American. She was famous, but no more interesting than anyone else. In retrospect perhaps it was because my friend's mom had died when she was about Harry's age. And maybe that resonated with her in a way I didn't quite catch back then.
