It seems to my ignorant male perspective that many women get into relationships they can either tell will be bad, or are willfully ignorant to the man's terrible qualities, because of infatuation that hardly goes away if there's attraction.

I might be bitter too and this post is probably going to get deleted for sounding too incel-like, but I have to agree. Some women will go for the "bad boy" type because they find those traits attractive, and she wants to believe that this guy will be different with her because he loves her so much, then she'll seem surprised when this isn't the case. Now I'm not saying this is an excuse for guys being abusive, but I do wish that women wouldn't keep enabling these guys through their own ignorance.
