"I hate country music, but..." But what? As a *guitarist* (and not a lyricist) why do you hate country music?

For one, its hard to have a legitimate discussion when you kick things off with "if you don't agree with me, what's wrong with you?"

What I said was (paraphrasing): if you're a guitarist and you hate country for the guitar playing, you're not listening.

You've already set up the assumptive right and wrong and made it difficult to have rational discussion, or at least made it clear that you don't intend to have any. So that's why you're getting down voted and likely won't see much thread participation.

No, I'm making my position apparent, and given the general reaction of r/Guitar to country music when it's posted, I've made a reasonable assumption that most of the people here are unwilling to give it a shot. If you don't like the fact that someone is taking a position other than neutral, I don't know what to tell you. I don't have a neutral opinion on this, and I do have the view that guitarists who just say, "I hate country," are being unnecessarily close-minded.

Also, given the replies here, it's pretty clear no one has bothered to either listen to the links I provided, and is going for the broad brush approach. Not surprising, I guess. But disappointing.

To give you my take, I think it's because the guitar playing in country music is hard to appreciate when covered by such in-your-face vocals and heinous lyrics. The songs are written around the vocals and everything else takes a backseat.

A broad brush statement if I ever heard one. So I'll respond by asking how you feel about metal, which is all just growling and dropped-tuning chugging with a ton of distortion.

The lyrics are often painfully awful, in my opinion, and I can't tune into and appreciate the rest of the ensemble because, try as I might, I can't hear past the overly clichéd use of pickup trucks and cowboy boots. There is no creativity in the lyricism, and the songs are all about the same few tired subjects. I listen to music as a musician, not a guitarist. The lyrics are just as much part of the music as the guitar part. They don't have to be stellar, but they need to not be so god awful in order for me to listen to the song long enough to appreciate guitar or other instruments.

More broad brushing. There are a lot of country song lyrics that aren't as you describe.
