Hate Crimes are a Tool of the Elite

It's an argument over Idealism vs Realism.

In an idea scenario, I'd want a totalitarian, communist government, run by an all benevolent, all powerful, all knowledgeable, all knowing dictator. But, in reality, that power would corrupt, and it would end up being horrible.

Similarly, "Hate Crime" laws may be able to work in a perfect society. Hell, if a government is just, and doesn't abuse its powers, there's no reason to keep ANY power from it. But, giving the government the power to decide based on RACE, how much your punishment is, is a dangerous precedent, in my opinion.

I understand what you are saying about "crimes of passion", and first vs second vs third degree murder. But, I disagree. A "hate crime" can also be a crime of passion, or a premeditated offense, just like any other crime. A neo Nazi could have planned a murder for two years, then done it, and it's first degree. Or he could just happen to see a jew on the street who angers him, and kill him in a crime of passion, with no pre-meditation.

So, while I agree that there ARE some distinctions that can be made with crimes, I don't think they should have anything to do with race.
