Hate crimes up 97% overall in Vancouver last year, anti-Asian hate crimes up 717%

It's not surprising given Covid-19 came from China and China is basically making a name for themselves as the worst bad actor on the world stage. China, as in the government of China, is the enemy of western nations at this point. There are good reasons to criticize and direct anger at China. Unfortunately most people aren't especially good at making the distinction between China, the country and government and ethnically Chinese people (or more generally just East Asian people) who live here in the west, are not affiliated with the Chinese communist party and in many cases have been here for multiple generations.

This isn't going to get better for Asian people in North America, unfortunately. As tensions between China and the west ratchet up, visibly Asian people are going to be perceived as foreign agents and enemies of the state. If you think things are bad now, just wait for the first big FBI arrest of the first big Chinese spy rings in the US. We're going to see a bunch of Asian-looking guys who have Chinese citizenship paraded through the court system and thrown in jail for the rest of their natural lives. The anti-Asian racism will get REALLY ugly after that. Just think about how hard it was to be a native Russian or Ukrainian speaking person in the US in the 1950s. The only difference is they could learn to sound American and blend in because they are white. Asian people don't have that luxury.
