I hate it when people compliment my mother without knowing the behind-the-scenes of my family.

I understand you.

My mom was one of the eldest of the family and got married young (17).. She has seen most of my older cousins being born. She became a mother way before her kids were born. I believe and she doesn't deny after I was born (third kid) she started to want more out of life...she wanted to (needed to) focus on herself. She started working. I was raised by my sisters and grandmothers and aunts and uncles and cousins. Again, not complaining I have a part of every one of them in me and I love it.

I don't like it when people assume I am who I am only because of my mom.

My mom doesn't really fit the popular mom mold but her independence is why I'm independent.

It's never simple.
