Haters will hate

Look, I’ve defended Qatar a lot against the dehumanising caricatures thrown at it (check my comment history), but there are legitimate concerns embedded inside the West’s discontent. Alcohol is an integral part of Western social life and culture. You cannot disregard this and expect there not to be any outrage. I would go further and say that it is stupendously tone-deaf to be dismissive of alcohol culture for a sports event that is meant to bring the world together. Of course, this outrage doesn’t justify the vile things they have been saying about Qatar and its society. They chose to be racist assholes on top of being upset, their newest low being their comments on Indian football fans.

Also, you are right that alcohol is not a human right. It is a social issue. Countries all around the world regulate alcohol to one extent or other. Same with Cannabis and other consumable goods. Did you know that Red Bull is banned in France, Denmark and Norway? Fucking Red Bull.
