They might have been raised by their grandmother.
Regardless, my parents were pretty much the same. Dad was always working, drinking, or watching sports/sports highlights. My mom, a southern pentecostal, sure as hell wasn't going to talk about sex education related topics with me. And I was homeschooled for most of my childhood, so no teachers to help out.
My saving grace was I had as much access to the library as I wanted; my mom was a prolific reader and would stay all day at the library unless I asked to leave. So I just researched and taught myself. Learned a lot of... tangential knowledge as well. Came in handy later in life, so maybe it was for the best.
