The only waste that is problematic in the long term is the spent fuel rods and you don't need or want permanent storage for those. Spent rods still contain most of their fissile material when they are spent. You need secure long term storage so the fission products can decay to a level that reprocessing is feasible. This is why the epa demanding a million year plan for Yucca Mountain is so preposterous, the plan was never to seal them inside forever. So instead the spent rods sit in pools built in sheds behind the power plan, a security and environmental time bomb. It's pretty fucking sad that organization created to protect the environment ends up creating environmental disasters and there are dozens of examples where this toxic bureaucratic mindset has harmed the environment.
