He always looks out for me

Here’s a true story.

I was a nerdy kid living with an abusive, drug-dealing stepdad (and alcoholic mom) so of course I was bullied pretty bad. I was so traumatized by life with my stepdad, I was in no position to defend myself - physically or psychologically.

One day walking home (this is in 7th grade) a kid who bullied me for years was taking swings at me as I tried to get home. One of my step-father’s “associates” lived next door to us, and saw this. We’ll call him Joe.

Joe came RUSHING over, grabbed this kid by the shirt, slapped him, threw him to the ground... then told me “go home. I need to take care of this.” And he pulled the kid behind his house.

To this day, I have no idea what happened after that. But my bully wouldn’t even look me in the eye after that day. I never had a problem with him, or anyone in his circle, ever again.

Thankfully I haven’t seen my stepdad in many, many years - dude was a legit monster. But I wish I could see Joe and thank him. He stood up for me in the only way he knew how - and did it at a time nobody else would.
