Health care industry decimated by coronavirus, loses 1.4 million jobs

My wife works in the health care industry. She basically runs and teaches a respiratory therapy program, and her students become respiratory therapists. Now, you would think that there would be a huge demand for these guys right now, but one of her students just got laid off from a hospital in California along with a bunch of other critical care nurses and other staff. Most hospitals here are not seeing a huge flux of COVID patients, and all elective surgeries are cancelled / post poned. Also, the lock downs and huge layoffs are having interesting medical consequences. ER visits are down big time, and a lot of people that would have been in car crashes, accidents, etc... are not because they're just staying home.
