Heavy Metal Stops...

I wanted to just keep firing forever, because that shit is fun.

Absolutely. I have 3 copies of Doom 2016 and have done many, many playthroughs of the game. Doom Eternal is looking like a one-and-done for me and I don't even think I can recommend it to my co-workers. I'm not sure what the fuck they were trying to solve there.

Doom 2016 gives you an amazing toolbox and you're given the freedom to solve problems as you see fit. You perform this glorious dance of death, fluidly switching weapons and dispensing righteous violence in the manner you deem appropriate. The "Push Forward" combat holds up from the lowest difficulty all the way up to the brutal but well-balanced Nightmare.

By comparison, you know what Doom Eternal reminds me of? Halo. It reminds me of a Halo game. My movements feel more sluggish, my melee attacks do nothing unless I do the equivalent of a backsmack, default weapon damage is actually quite pitiful, but it's all about "weaknesses" and secondary fire now. Needing to chuck or launch a grenade into the mouth of Caco Demon as the only legitimate way to kill one on Nightmare difficulty is a fucking joke, it's quite comical. That mechanic is actually cool but it's a joke when you're doing it five times in one encounter because that's the only way to kill Caco Demons now. Similarly, Archanotrons are a gross violation of the rules of Push Forward Combat. Hanging back and sniping at them with repeated grenades is not what I signed on for.

It's actually a giant fucking joke that folks on this sub feel obligated to defend Bethesda as well. Like, their life loses meaning or something if Doom Eternal isn't as good as Doom 2016. I really don't fucking get it. I've not seen a singe legitimate defense of these absurd changes to game mechanics except stupid shit like "git gud".
