HELP!

So legally, you are being charged with assault which is pretty serious and definitely has the potential of a year jail time. The State will offer a plea deal to you which your lawyer or public defender can negotiate. Usually, depending on your criminal record, you can get away from this with a year of classes, some community service, 3 year probation, and a no contact order. That will essentially make it a crime for you and your significant other to be around each other, with all risk being assumed by you since she wouldn't get in trouble for the two of you being together.

You can also reject this plea deal and have a trial, which I recommend if you're truly innocent, but ONLY after carefully reviewing tree he evidence the State has against you which they would use at said trial.

Tell your lawyer or public defender that you want to view the discovery before agreeing to any plea deal and DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER.

If it seems the evidence they have will make you look bad in front of a jury, consider not taking the risk and maybe accept a plea deal. Also, research and learn about the "trial penalty."
