[Help] Buying from a breeder or adopting a puppy?

I got my first (adult) dog from a rescue but plan on getting a puppy in the future from a breeder. (Although I do intend to continue to foster and adopt adult/senior dogs)

My reasons for choosing a reputable breeder for a puppy, in no particular order:

  • you can pick a breed that suits your needs and lifestyle, and is permitted by your landlord/HOA/home insurance/city laws. Rescues lie and it can be harder to tell with puppies.
  • you know to expect breed-specific behavior (herding, prey drive, reactivity depending on breed)
  • you know how big it's going to get
  • you know the expected adult energy level and temperment
  • the puppy will be screened for common health issues in the breed and will usually come with some kind of 1-2 year health guarantee
  • you'll know how the puppy was raised during it's early developmental periods. ("Puppy culture" programs)
  • the breeder will continue to be a resource to you for the lifetime of the puppy and will take it back at any life stage if needed. The shelter I got my dog from made me sign a piece of paper saying once he was off their property he was my problem forever unless I returned in 7 days or less. (Large fee for return after this)
  • most shelters will not adopt out intact pets. Pediatric spay and neuter are associated with some health issues

These factors may or may not be important to you. Rescue is a great option for many people! It gives an unwanted dog a loving home for life. But puppies are a challenge all to their own and I do feel like going through a reputable breeder helps set things up for success.
