Help me explain gender self-identity to my kids

To go off the theoretical biology, some research on brain scans have suggested differences in regions of the brain that are tied to self awareness/consciousness and body mapping (having them reflect more closely to the structure of one's identified gender). This affects self perception, what kind of socialization one is more receptive to, identity, personality, and all.

And there are some other unique features in brains of to trans people that aren't present in cis people. Add some genes that may make it so the brain can't respond to estrogen or androgen like they normally would (possibly due to crossover/transplant mutations).

Most of the other regions of the brain that exhibit differences seem differentiate and develop based on exposure to hormones.

You can take it with a grain of salt as all such research is rather limited in scope. Much of anti-trans research tend to use tomboys and effeminate men in place of trans identifying people.
