Help me retort to racist teachers

This angers me to NO end! Student culture should be celebrated and encouraged!

I have only ever taught ELL and in Title 1. I’ve made the effort to learn some basic Spanish to help my kids.

We were doing a segmenting lesson a week or so ago and had a Buffalo picture. None of my kids had seen a Buffalo (we live outside of a big city). One of my kids yelled “ El Torro!” And it was the best thing I heard all week! He used what he knew and said what he thought it looked like. It was a great opportunity to talk about torro means bull and a Buffalo is very similar. It helps kids make connections between languages and learn new vocabulary. It’s beneficial to all students!

Students should be able to speak to each other, especially socially, in their 1st language. It’s a part of who they are and their culture. It’s also a great way to develop language and social skills, no matter what the language is!

I CANNOT get over them not allowing the kids to speak to each other! Enrages me!
