Help! MIL vs hallway

I’m not sure those steps are up to code if they’re all different heights. I’d get it fixed if I were you.

It's one of those houses where nothing is up to code and an architect would break things out of frustration (husband does daily). All of the light switch covers need to be cut by an inch and a half because whoever put the doors in forgot that they need to be framed. Some walls appear to have no studs. We've yet to find a 90 degree angle. Fixing the weird step thing will require reflooring the majority of the house and taking about 3-4 inches from the ceiling, so here we are.

I have totally considered caution tape but I don't want to come off condescending. You're making sense, I might make up a story of someone else having the same problem and how we just have a policy now for everyone's wellbeing and safety.
