Help taking up drinking

  1. I strongly disagree with the suggestion of starting with a cocktail or any other mixed alcoholic drink. Alcohol is an acquired taste. Both in terms of its actual taste as well as in terms of judging its effects in comparison to the amount you've been drinking. Any form of mixed drinks messes that up for a beginner.
  2. Start drinking in private first. A bar really isn't the best way to get started. Ideally at home and with a friend who is either experienced already or willing to look after you. Don't do it with a "friend" (=crush) though as alcohol decreases inhibitions.
  3. Only one or max 2 different kinds of alcohol on an evening.
  4. Eat well before, drin a lot of water before and inbetween the alcohol as well as eating bread (white breads are usually preferred such as an baguette).
  5. Keep in mind alcohol takes about 2-3 hours to fully kick in.
  6. Drink your first few sips and wait an hour to check if you are one of those few who absolutely can't handle alcohol even if their life depended on it. Afterwards build yourself steadily up from there.
  7. Ideally start with beer, liquor or wine. They aren't as strong. For beer get American beer since its watered down in comparison to European beer.
  8. General amounts to drink over a few hours to orientate yourself are ~1,5l of beer, ~0,3-0,4l of wine or ~0,15l of vodka/rum/whiskey. These amounts should get you tipsy while remaining safe from going too bad. Except #6 applies to you.
  9. Weight affects the amounts you can handle. If your are extra small/skinny or extra big, the numbers from #8 aren't fully accurate.
  10. If you still live with your parents, make sure to open up your window over night. You will breathe out some booze-scent. And if your parents recognise it, them you're in trouble and they most likely have experience with alcohol, making them hypocrites.
