Help! Weird financial aid bind.

Okay, so let’s see if I can explain this and not lose you too quickly. This 60% number that you are thinking about does not mean that you are owed money. The 60% number only applies to a student who has received aid and has completely withdrew or got dropped all from their classes (also known as R2T4).

For example, I am a student enrolled in 12 units and get paid financial aid based on that class load. So I’ve received a whole bunch of money for the classes I am currently enrolled in. I then decide that I am going to drop all 12 units because maybe I had a family emergency or I just like to see the world burn (favorite Batman series btw). Well now you would think hey, I got paid money for these classes, but then I dropped them all; I should have to pay some if not all of that money back right? Not necessarily. Even though I was paid based on 12 units and then dropped them all, here’s the kicker, if I attended at least 1 of my classes at least 60% of the term; I earned ALL of that money. Therefore, I do not need to pay any of it back and I am entitled to all that I received (not the full amount I would’ve gotten if I stayed enrolled).

Now in your situation you never actually got paid financial aid, so you do not fall under this situation. So when the financial aid office looks at your file, they just see an incomplete (or complete if you finished it) file and a student who is currently not enrolled in any units. So they won’t pay you anything unfortunately.
