Helping parents buy a 70/75 inch for under $1500

At that price point and size, the only option you probably have is the TCL. Please note a couple of things:

  1. There are benefits to having a 4k tv and a panel with a 120hz refresh, but please do not confuse this with needing a tv that can do 4k@120hz (which would need hdmi 2.1). Your dad is not viewing/playing any content that would take advantage of that.

For movies, most of them are in 24hz. I can count on my fingers how many films are filmed in something higher, and the highest they get to for home use is 60fps (gemini man, walk of Billy lynn or whatever it's called are examples). A tv that can handle 3:2 pulldown well is what can help prevent judder. Tech like Sonys Cinemotion is good for this. Im less familiar with what TCL has for judder.

  1. The big issues with sports are motion blur for the quick movement, and Dirty Screen Effect (DSE) which can sometimes show patchy discolorations in the large single color expanses of field/rink/court that are viewable in sporting events, super visible in hockey. For motion blur, having a 120hz can be helpful but only for motion interpolation purposes because the sports themselves would be received at 60fps. What you really want for motion blur is a fast response time. The mediocre response time of the 2019 TCL 6 series is why some people complained about the motion and ghosting. I have not seen any detailed numbers or even fast footage of the 2020 TCL, so i cannot help you here.

My thoughts are I do believe that the TCL will probably be your best option mainly due to the price range at that size being fairly restrictive. If you want to see whether or not the TCL is good enough, I would pay attention to reviews that specifically get into the response time or performance during sports. I believe it will be an excellent buy for movie/netflix viewing.
