High performing people and effective performance management

High performance is defined based on the organization's Key Beliefs and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) They're grouped into sections: safe & secure, business performance, etc

We use a Performance Rating Scale to measure performance on a scale of 0.0 - 4.0. Employees are rated based on how well they incorporate the key beliefs in their everyday worklives.

High performing employees using score higher on the rating scale and it usually opens up more opportunities offered through the department. The organization rewards high performers with merit pay increase & excellence awards.

Process: We use midyear appraisals as "pulse checks" with employees and the final annual appraisals to rate employees on their overall performance for the year. Throughout the year, mgmt and their reports are expected to communicate & be engaged with each other.

With the right leaders, high performance management can be very successful. It's basically micro-mentoring at its finest. Leadership mentors their team and continues to shape and mold them to be their predecessors or move onto other higher responsibility/higher paying roles within the organization, and increases/maintains employee engagement.
