Hijab and Nudism, The Problem of Personal Choice.

I'm a Chinese Muslim who lived in the Middle East for 2.5 years then immigrated to North America. I don't wear hijab but I do have Muslim friends who chose to wear hijab and niqab despite their family's objection.

For example, a Turkish friend of mine went to Canada to study because back then wearing hijab was not allowed in the universities in Turkey, but in Canada no one cares. A malay friend chose to wear niqab but her whole family is telling her that she would get into trouble and pressuring her not to wear it. In a lot of Muslim countries, wearing hijab or niqab is not an requirement of Islam, just as not letting a woman drive is not part of Islam (Saudi haram police would tell you differently though.) If you're telling them "hijab is oppressive you shouldn't wear it," then what's the difference between you and the intolerant, oppressive people you were talking about? People from different cultures would interpret the religion differently, just as how there are so many sections of christianity or judaism. By the way, even a lot of Muslims think hijab is oppressive and force their kids not to wear it. One of the reasons some girls choose to wear it is because hijab represents embracing their personal religious belief, especially living in a time where racism and Islamophobia prevail. If someone else wearing a piece of headscarf is bothering you, then a lot of things in this world can bother you even more than that.

So I do agree your upbringing influences what you think a lot. Your social pressure around you also pushes you into believing something even when you've never personally experienced it. I never even thought wearing hijab is a controversial topic until I came to North America.. When I was a kid, I also thought all Americans were evil capitalists who always get into everyone's business and thinking they're the cultural police of the whole world because that's what some old people in China used to tell kids that. Then when you go out and see the outside world, you'd realize things are a lot more complicated and what you heard might not be always true.

Also, nudity or hijab both have to do with social context and culture. For example, you would not wear bikini going to work, but you would wear it on the beach. In China walking around naked in a public shower of a gym is not a big deal, but in North America everyone would think you have no sense of shame. xD
