Hiring managers (or equivalent title) of reddit, what can people do to ace the interview, even if you know they don't have enough work experience for the job?

I recently got a job that I did not meet the minimum qualifications for. Here's what worked for me:

Got good references, this got me in the door.

Bring a notepad and pencil, take notes during the interview

I was very upfront about where my skills and experience are. I made it clear that I was interested in learning new skills and new jobs.

I was ready to answer the interview. This was huge. You can Google "interview questions" and use those as a template to tailor your responses. Don't be surprised and try to answer these on the fly. Make your responses appropriate for the job you are interviewing.

When the interviewer asks "what questions do you have...?" Do not say "no"! This is your last chance to make a lasting impression. I asked:

  • What qualities and traits do successful people in this position possess?

  • why is the position I'm applying for open?

  • how long do employees in this position stay? Are there oppertunities to move up?

I really want to give the impression that not only am I interested in the job, but also learning and growing as a person.
