Hiring managers, do you require a degree?

I call bullshit, I doubt you know who had a college degree or who didn't in your workplace based on a help desk ticket. Such a total crock of bullshit.

You misread what I was saying. I know who had a college degree and who didn't because I had most of them on linkedin, we have public profiles for everyone that shares their background, and I have access to internal HR data because I am a developer for that stuff. What I observed is a correlation (with some exceptions) between those who had awful writing ability and those who didn't go to college.

Again, you learn grammar and writing skills in high school. I'm sorry you attended secondary school where you didn't have points deducted for grammatical errors.

You learn it at a very basic level in high school and many people can pass without really meeting basic requirements. If you really think high school level English is all there is to professional writing, I am willing to bet you suck at it too.

70% of people in the United States do not have a degree. The majority of degree holders majored in useless subjects like english or business administration. I have a degree, but I sit next to four others who never finished college. 3 of these people make a hell of a lot more money than you, I guarantee it.

It's more like 64% don't have a degree and that number is rapidly declining. And a shit load of those 65% make near minimum wage working at wal-mart, fast food restaurants, and as CNAs. Take the average AND median salaries of those without degrees and those with degrees and you will see a huge discrepancy.

And talk shit about English or Business administration all you want, I know plenty of people making bank with those degrees in marketing, financial services, or non-technical management. All of which are in positions where the degree was required.

IT is one of the few professional fields that even have that many people without degrees working in them. When was the last time you went to your accountant who had no degree? Bought a car designed by engineers who didn't have degrees?

I have a degree, but I sit next to four others who never finished college. 3 of these people make a hell of a lot more money than you, I guarantee it.

One of my best friends has no degree, is objectively smarter than me, and makes twice what I make as a developer. I am not saying that never happens. I am saying it isn't what commonly happens.

Also, I'm coming for those guys.
