History buffs of Reddit, what's a really shitty thing the US did that most Americans won't hear about at school?

In the early 70s a bunch of prisoners took over a prison in NY and held the COs and some civilian workers hostage, demanding better living conditions among several other things. After a several day stalemate in negotiations, Governor Rockefeller sent a bunch of state troopers and COs from other prisons to take the prison back. Using 12 gauge shot guns with buck shot and .270 rifles with jacketed bullets, they took the prison back. In the process, they killed 10 hostages and a ton of prisoners. After the overtaking, the officers continued to beat, execute, and torture the remaining survivors. I never learned about the Attica prison revolt until recently, however to me I️t represents a fairly questionable act on the part of the state, and is also representative of a very tumultuous time of social unrest.
