Hit-and-run driver leaves a 19 year old victim in a critical condition

My ex was foreign and didn't "get" the concept of car insurance. We shared a parking spot at our apartment, one day I change my oil so I take my car off the street (residential), put it in the spot, and put her car where mine was parked on the street. Day goes by, we go to bed.

We wake up in the middle of the night to a police knock- you know the kind.

Her car was in pieces all over the street and sidewalk. During the night, a guy fleeing the scene of a different crime (IIRC, a low-value burglary) ended up hitting her car as he fled police. The cops got him a few days later because of evidence left at the scene of the accident, but since she had neither insurance nor did the other driver have insurance, her only recourse was to sue. This guy was still sitting in jail weeks later on a small bond, which indicated to me that he wasn't even worth the penstrokes of a lawsuit.

  • "Uninsured motorist" coverage, while an optional add-on for most policies, is an absolute must, simply because there are so many accidents like this with people.
