"HIV does not make people dangerous to know, so you can shake their hands and give them a hug: Heaven knows they need it." -Princess Diana, 1991

I'm an old fart who survived the era of AIDS, and now I worry more about the HIV drugs destroying my kidneys and liver more than I do about AIDS. I'm sure what Di did was helpful, but I really haven't seen it. Even in 2018, we generally keep our mouths shut about having HIV because people will not hesitate to treat you like a complete piece of garbage the second they find out. You can see it in their face. One moment they're looking at you like you are a person, and the moment you tell them you have HIV their face completely changes as if they were looking at something they feel nothing but hate for. They instantly no longer have any concern for you as a human being. There are people who are exceptions, but the expected response is instant dehumanization. It tends to be a sure thing from people who are religious, as they already believe they are more important than everyone else (god loves me but everyone who isn't like me is going to hell). So anyone who considers themselves to be a kind, caring christian is almost sure to fail the test of caring about a person with HIV. That's just been my personal experience for decades.

The worst thing about HIV stigma, is that stigma is what's fueling the epidemic at this point. Treatment makes people unable to infect others because it makes the level of virus so low that it's no longer possible to infect others. That's why you're infinitely more likely to get HIV from someone you hook up with who just assumes they don't have it and has never been tested than you are from someone who is telling you that they are HIV+. But people can't start treatment if they don't get tested. The #1 reason why people don't get tested is because of the stigma. If we could only end the stigma, we could end HIV/AIDS. But here we are in the information age, where everything you could want to know about HIV is at the tip of your fingers, and people are STILL clueless. So I don't have much hope that the stigma will ever go away.
