Do you think hockey will ever become as big as soccer?

No.

It costs too much to play for anyone in a major city who comes from a normal family and isn't at the very least upper middle class.

Aside from rural kids, if you played hockey as a kid you were either considerably well off or your dad really wanted you to play hockey and made it work. It'd be an interesting study to see the average family income of players families drafted in the first round of the NHL compared to the average Canadian.

There are lots of climates where ice is harder to maintain. So the ability for the game to grow by having people immersed in it culturally and playing it in different areas of the world is extremely limited.

If RHI didn't kill itself by over expanding and roller hockey took off, there'd be potential for Roller Hockey to grow and maybe surpass ice hockey within a few decades as it is a sport that can be played in all climates, and communities could easily put free outdoor roller hockey "rinks" in parks that would be much cheaper and easier to maintain than indoor ice facilities, or even outdoor rinks which we have at parks in Ottawa in the winter. On a side note, I'm surprised the NHL doesn't see the benefit of propping up a spring/summer pro roller hockey league. It'd be a very good way to expand the game and create new fans.
