Holiday BnB company unconcerned that a lone female found a stranger checked into her apartment at 2:00am and had nowhere else to go.

Ok so they replied, and quite frankly, it makes zero sense:

"So I have looked at the reservation with Phillip and this was a request to book reservation not an instant book , with these you send a request and the host has to manually confirm the request , in this case he did not , this is why you did not get a confirmation email and perhaps why he wasnt trying to help as such , this reservation was never active."

A reservation is either legitimate or not, right?

After the first reservation was cancelled without warning, the agent said he would make sure my next one was confirmed. He said he'd spoken to the host and that although I hadn't received the email confirmation, he was ready for me to check in.

He did not say this may result in your host being totally unhelpful...
