Hollow Knight - 2017 Game Discussions

Possibly the only metroidvania I've played that managed to capture what made SotN so special, which is a legitimate feeling of exploration. Super Metroid is a good game, but you see the green door and you think "I need to get the super missiles to open this." Hollow Knight is so clever with how these sorts of obstacles are constructed that I was constantly wondering whether I was supposed to be in the area I was in, and eventually I just stopped questioning things and went wherever I could. So, instead of the game being about finding upgrades to get past roadblocks, it became one about exploring the world and just happening to find things along the way to help you. Basically, it stopped feeling like a game at all.
