Homeless dog receives much needed love and food from good samaritan

I went to Peru about a year ago and ended up stuck in Mancora for like a month and a half due to flooding. During that time, I collected myself quite the pack of dogs.

There were a lot of stray beach dogs. It started with this lab mix who I called Tristina (because she was pretty pathetic and puns in a second language are hard)... I don't want to imply that South Americans are cruel to animals because that's not really the case. But I guess my particular North American brand of dog baby talk and sweetness and affection was very new to Tristina, because this dog latched on to me hard. Every day I'd come down to the beach and call her. And when she found me she would just go crazy. She'd scream and wail and make such a commotion when she found me that I'd frequently have to assure people that I wasn't harming her.

I would, of course, give Tristina food all the time. And she became something of a dog ambassador. There were dogs she didn't like, and she would viciously herd them away from me. But there were dogs that she did like, and I don't know how, but she must have told them about me, because they came. And by the end of my time there I had like 6 dogs, always lead by Tristina, who followed me everywhere I went. They followed me to my apartment every night and sat outside. And I'd give them food and loves and it was just the fucking best. I had just so many fleas by the end of it, but whatever. Worth it.

It killed me that I couldn't take all of them home. Every single one was just so sweet and desperate for love and attention, but Tristina was my favorite. When I left, my Peruvian friend promised to look after her, but he was never much for dogs and he's probably long gone from Mancora now. I think about those sweet dogs all the time. I hope they're all well, but that's all I can do from here.
