Homeless or Former Homeless people of Reddit, what are some of the smaller things people have said or given to you that helped you out?

Currently homeless, living in a shelter. The one thing that helped the most was that someone told me that no matter what happens, someone can help, if you help yourself first. My situation is a little different than most homes because I am a Vet without severe mental issues. The moment I became homeless, I went directly to the VA and requested assistance. At the moment I have a roof over my head, a shower whenever I want, clothing, and food. All because I took the time to ask questions. I got a job working at Navy Pier, then applied to college and am now a full time student. The people who are "homeless veterans" on the corner are typically scumbags who are either lying, or they are scumbags who refuse to help themselves and prey on the generosity of others. We ARENT all like that; sometimes, a bad situation arises and you have to find a way to help yourself through it. But you have to put forward the effort.
