Homeschooling Produces Better-Educated, More-Tolerant Kids. Politicians Hate That

I'm a pro-homeschooling guy, but this article is weak. :(

The citation for showing homeschooling produces "more tolerant kids" compares students who already self-selected into an evangelical Christian university. Without judgment of whether such a school is good or not, it definitely isn't a representative sample of the population as a whole and conclusions like this shouldn't be extrapolated.

Second, it's well-known homeschoolers perform better academically. A really hard problem here is showing causation rather than correlation. Most homeschool parents (like my parents and probably many of you) are super invested in giving their kids the best education possible, so it's no surprise that parents who embrace the role of educator will tend to produce academically achieved kids.

Third, it's really not obvious that politicians hate better educated or more tolerant kids. Sure, some places want additional regulations, but that's okay and need not be correlated with whatever changes are made in public schools. The state has a legitimate role in ensuring an adequate education for all children, including those whose parents choose to homeschool.

The only redeeming part of the article is its conclusion, suggesting politicians and educators ought to learn from homeschoolers who seem to be doing well.
