Be honest, what's the most cringy thing you've done?

By twilit overture composed of wind chime and ephemeral dream, the mask fissured its calloused exterior with attuned breaths of sublimating hatred. Hector Zacoraza traversed the sunup, late to everything as always, as red clarified the long-jaded opaque.

By midafternoon, he began to wake whilst sitting next to Helen in a room of easily monetized drudgery; all gray but her. The room’s conversational topic turned to poison. He briefly paid attention, realized poison was drudgery disguised as death, and returned to introspective stasis in wait for the bell to toll.

It did. Hector walked alongside Helen and her friend north, resisting the southern pull of his ditch in the dirt. Her friend was cute, nice, all that shit, but no, he had to pursue her.

For Woman’s umbra had made him covet fool’s gold, locked in cascading crest and trough upon her neck; made him pursue the sun trapped into specks on her idol-chiseled cheeks, and yearn for the tired burnish of the teak in her eyes; yet deeper still, it had spellbound him to seek bat-like the sultry treble of her siren song’s rasp.

Humid air sifted through the mask’s cracks. He spoke of aspirations and soul as if not blackened by the absurd, a rosy cloud of carcinogens walking, talking and listening. Soon, the three came to a divergence in their paths.

As the two girls split, he fought his every isolationist, dysfunctional instinct and approached Helen before she disappeared behind pitch-paneled glass. Transiently, they were alone.

Through infatuated white noise, crude words escaped his ego’s grasp, “Hey. Helen. If you want, you can read what I wrote.”

She didn’t hear.

“If you want to read what I wrote, you can.” What motherfucking wit.

“Yeah, sure … What, like right now?”

Chingada madre, you knew she had shit to do, “Yeah, if you want.”

She responded she couldn’t at the time. He told her to say when she could; she sang she would. Hector waited, and he wrote. Fortune beckoned four days hence.
