I'd narrowed it down to hunter (currently 27) and have been playing it recently and enjoying it quite a bit
As someone who mained a Hunter from the end of vanilla to WoTLK, I will implore you; don't main a Hunter.
I mained a Hunter because I am a social outcast in real life, and always have been, so for a long time I was able to rationalise soloing if it allowed me to do something I loved. However, in nearly three years, (July 2006 to Febuary 2009) I can count the number of raids I went to on one hand.
A Hunter is either a PvP, or solo PvE class. In group PvE, however, they are by far the most hated class in this game. Nobody will want you. Some people will try and be nice about it, and invite you due to the "bring the player, not the class" principle; (especially in low to mid level 5 mans, where it doesn't hurt them much) but you having the lowest PvE DPS, a relative lack of utility outside of crowd control, and the constant threat of catastrophic wipes because of your pet, will be in the backs of everyone's minds.
The Hunter stereotype is an intellectually challenged 14 year old who is playing their first class, and was drawn to the Hunter because it enables you to get a cute pet. If you play as a Hunter, that is the image that everyone will have of you, and unless you are individually almost better than God, you will never completely get rid of it.
If you want to choose the PvP track, or if you enjoy soloing five mans which you are overlevelled for, then yes, playing a Hunter can be a truly ecstatic experience. However, it will also be an extremely lonely one.
As there was during retail, in Classic right now there is a tank shortage. If you can possibly learn to enjoy it, I would strongly encourage you to roll a Protection Warrior. Because of both their rarity and their necessity, tanking Warriors are universally loved. People will give you all of the best gear without protest, and if you are at all decent, getting places in raids will be effortless.
In this game, tragically, there are two choices. You can choose to do what you love, play a DPS class, and be alone forever; or you can play a Warrior or Priest.
