Honestly, I’m not sure why past eligibility for a Pell grant makes a difference in who gets 10k or 20k forgiven

Yeah but isn't that what the pell grant already does? It's money that doesn't need to be repaid. Marginalized people get this grant that covers a lot if not all their tuition. That's already evening the playing field a lot. If it doesn't cover all of tuition and cost of living while going to college, then I can understand this extra $10k forgiveness. But if pell grants mostly cover everything already it's like double dipping. And it sucks cause it's a slap in the face to others like me who's parents "make too much", but still can't or won't (my case) help. So we have to take out huge loans with no grant, and those have been collecting interest all this time making it more uneven.

But, the worst thing about this is that they decided everyone else gets $10k only. Why? Why split us up like this into a situation where one group gets more? A group that already has a usually very generous grant? I don't know if it's someone's cunning intention, but it feels a lot like some kind of class warfare instigation. Everyone should have had the same amount refunded, it's like they know $10k wasn't enough so they needed to give marginalized people more. It doesn't make sense to give "reparations" here, in the form of debt relief, because it still fucks over others unequally. Loans and debt are a kind of equalizing force. Those who truly came from middle, upper middle, or wealthy classes are able to easily pay off their debt or might not have had to take out loans. But the rest of us somewhere in-between (i think most people, because everyone who's parents brainwashed them to go to college didn't realize how bad the tuition had gone up in relation to wages) who had no help from family but still had to take out max loans with little to no grant or scholarship get fucked with less forgiveness.
