honestly, was it worth it to buy an m1 max compared to the new m2?

I'm going to step in here as what you're not presenting a cohesive argument.

The only advantage the M2 will have over the M1 Max is in single core performance (even then I expect it to be minimal). Aside from that the M1 Max outclasses the M2 on every level. These chips are designed for totally different target markets.

If you are a developer, I would encourage you to consider what you're looking for in a computer as an M2 and M1 Max are very, very different beasts. What chip you feel is best for your needs will come down to the types of applications your developing, for example, so I think you need to reflect on your requirements and take the time to understand what the difference between the M2 and M1 Max is before making a final decision.
