Is honesty even a decent trait in SEO anymore?

The problem with online reviews is that there is incentive to promote affiliated products and services.

This 'recepie' has become so popular now that searching google for reviews feels like crawling through spam.

I prefer to browse through old school type forums and the like for peoples opinions sometimes, but even these aren't immune to astroturfing (for eg. when businesses behave like regular users acting in good faith, but actually are trying to 'smuggle' product recommendations into their posts).

You can also find some decent YouTubers, but many of those will be pushing their affiliates aswell. You gotta use discretion.

Speaking to your question - honestly if you just wanted to rank 'the 5 best X' type posts and generate income, I reckon that churning out volume which just passes the algorithm test is probably the most effective way you can do it. Who knows how these posts will be treated down line though.

On the other hand, if you were more interesting in using SEO as part of a larger strategy to build your own following using high value and trustable content, then that can be a strength long term.
