Hong Kong: Why NZ should care

But of course, the Áñez regime are pro-Western neo-liberals

It's more about people seeing China as a potential threat, so anything involving them seems relevant, while the situation in Bolivia (if someone knows about it at all) seems less likely to impact the lives of anyone here. There's a lot of coverage of HK protests getting media attention, so of course that's the thing people focus on. More media coverage makes it easier to empathize with the people involved.

There are too many shitty things happening, for people to care about all of them at the same time. Just keeping track of everything major that's going on in the world is taxing enough. "You mention Bolivia, but what about the Amazon, climate change, the threat of AI...etc"

Whenever someone brings attention to a problem in the world, someone else comes along as says "what about this other thing". Forget about Maori, Bolivia, and the HK protestors....what we should really be caring about is (insert thing here).

It's like a plane full of 'whattaboutism Hijackers' on the internet sometimes. One stands up, pulls out a gun and says "what about going to this place now?". Then another stands up and says "what about going to France instead?".

Imagine not being able to discuss a topic, without some hijacker replying with "but what about...?" can you see how that would get annoying?
