‘House of the Dragon’ Star Steve Toussaint Slams Racist Viewers: ‘They’re Happy With a Dragon Flying’ but Not a ‘Rich Black Guy’

Why? Putting aside this is a fantasy show, with dragons. If we’re talking about mediaeval Europe, which a whole bunch of racists love to appeal to, folks would have barley noticed.

“Race” as an idea doesn’t exist yet. Religious bigotry, absolutely. That was how “us” and “them” were defined. But race as an idea, and specifically anti-black racism as an ideology doesn’t emerge until 16th or 17th centuries. It’s not an accident that it emerged in tandem with the colonization of the Americas and the birth of the Transatlantic slave trade.

In universe, why is it so fucking hard to imagine that of course the nobility of old Valyria would have intermarried with the aristocracies of the Summer Islands, or 1000 other places?
