House hunting in the inner north

Where do some of these landlords and real estate get off? We have a 2 bedroom apartment we lease out in an inner city suburb in Melbourne (we are renting a house from someone else about 1 hour out of the city with space for our kids and close to family so we are landlords and also have a landlord we rent from) when we put our apartment up for lease the real estate agent came up with a number around $600 per week and I told her I don’t think it’s worth that she kept pushing to see if it would get any traction and she kept lowering the price slowly I said to her “look we want a tenant in and we want it to be reasonable so they keep resigning the lease and are happy so we can forget about it, make it X per week” she finally listened to me because I was getting annoyed her hosting these open houses and I would have to take my baby out at inconvenient times and keep the house super tidy etc And we needed a tenant in to help pay our rent for the house we were moving to! I told the agent this is what is should be and if she isn’t happy I’ll find another agent. She lowered the price to a reasonable price that was very competitive for the area and what do you know? Found a great tenant who sent her application in that day and was happy to sign on straight away!

If you treat your tenants with respect And don’t try and rip people off I believe you are better in the long run with a happy tenant that wants to keep resigning the lease and makes it their home they are more likely in my opinion to take care of the property!

The agents also are greedy because they get a fee percentage so they will jack up the price and see if anyone is willing to pay it. It’s disappointing and wasting time for everyone involved!
