Because Christianity, shock and horror, is MORE than just protestantism. It's not just "orthodoxy and the rest of the cults hurr durr", (listen, JP is a great and attested psychologist but he's not a historian and he's definitely not a religious historian), Christianity, like the other Abrahamic religions, has a lot of denominations and not one can be considered to be "the cradle of civilization" or "the true one" and orthodoxy is among the most backwards and most malfunctioning of all, losing ground at much higher pace than Catholicism or the sects that have a resurgence in Africa. Greek democracy was a lot different than what we call democracy, only 30% of the population had the right to vote, and it would be misleading to say that the tradition of Greek democracy was an important part of the revolutionaries' intellectual background. The classical example that inspired the American and French revolutionaries as well as the English radicals was Rome rather than Greece. Thus, the Founding Fathers who met in Philadelphia in 1787, did not set up a Council of the Areopagos, but a Senate, that, eventually, met on the Capitol. But the Romans were not democratic, but a republic that later became an empire, and that republic's Senate was filled in with the rich families, akin to an oligarchy.
