How the algorithm behind TikTok works

Yeah... and we have American made products doing the same thing, Facebook, Twitter, etc and news conglomerates do the same thing...

The real issue is in reliance on algorithms... but at the same time we don't have any good alternatives.

Algorithms are necessary, otherwise everything would be sorted by date? Alphabetically? That's not going to work for anyone! Not when literally millions of pieces of content are being uploaded every second? minute? hour?

The alternative is algorithms that sort based on a user's data profile, showing popular things because they are popular, which makes them more popular, which eventually leads to a loop that reduces everything to either their basest values, divisive or binary extremes... which computer scientists have been cautioning people about since the advent of search engines... Its the same reason we used to argue against news conglomerates.. reducing the number of perspectives or we receive to a few is dangerous, which also opens us up to being fed someone else's perspectives... influencing our political views, societal views, shopping habits, trends, etc.

These algorithms, often paired with economic incentives (like those of ad revenue), tend to be the most dangerous as they are the most likely to reinforce loops (or echo-chambers, or circle-jerks, or whatever you want to call them) to devolve the fastest, but is also the economic driving force of the internet keeping most services relatively... free.

The problem is... either people can't think of better solutions or more fair algorithms without dipping into censorship or curating online content (which is dangerous in its own way), or don't care to because they profit from the current algorithms.

Personally, I think until we evolve technologically or socially... we just have to chalk it up to growing pains. Curating online content using algorithms is still a very new technology, relatively speaking. Its a new era of technology, and new rules will have to be drafted eventually... hopefully before everything blows up in our faces. God knows there are people WAY smarter than me who can't figure it out, so I'm just going to avoid as much social media as I can and try to read as much as I can, but yeah... it's fucked, and there's not much we can do about it. Only choice is varying degrees of participate, or don't, really...
