How do American students stay afloat with a place to live and still have money to study?

Thank you for your answer! My family is in a position where my mother went through bad problem with her kidneys and dialysis and other problems where she was very sick. She had a transplant, but money is tough at the moment and my father is very emotionally and verbally abusive to my mother so it hurts to be I a position to be dependent of him for law school but not be independent to live by myself or help support my mother.

It just seemed like a movie idea where a student can live independent even with or without debt and I just wanted to see if I could take life lessons from Americans to be as strong-hearted and willed in those positions. I hope I was able to articulate my feelings and desire to ask the initial question.

Again, thank you for your answer!
