How to annoy Europeans with just one sentence?

Yes, I had to deleted my comments because the Irish brigade was downvoting all my posts (and all the other posts by people mentioning British Isles as a valid geographical term) and I'm not going to bait more people into witch hunting me because I've expressed myself unclearly in response to you antagonising me.

Scottish people will remain British, even if they leave the UK, because they live on the island of Great Britain.

And how can you not have the same problem with this, when you have a problem with being called British for living on the British Isles? Shouldn't the Scottish complain just as much? Or is it a problem only for you because you're Irish, and you couldn't care less about the Scottish?

I pointed out that it had not been used for "thousands of years", which is what you stated.

I said it has a history of over thousand years and it does. That it wasn't the official term by the entire world during all of that time doesn't mean anything to the conversation, when I grew up it was called the British Isles and we didn't invent that name. You yourself agree Great Britain is Great Britain, and the islands surrounding Great Britain are the British Isles as a result of that.

The term "Balkans" doesn't express, for example, Serbian ownership of Croatia, which is why it is a neutral geographical term

Just like British Isles does not imply UK ownership of Ireland. The islands are the British Isles no matter who rules in Great Britain or in Ireland. If all of it was the Republic of Ireland it would still be the British Isles and Irish people on Great Britain would be British (according to your own sentiment, unless I misunderstood your statement about Scotland.)
