I live in Missouri, a state that does not support abortion even for ectopic pregnancy, which is a life threatening condition. I’m terrified that in our first ultrasound, we find out that that’s the case for us, or if I suddenly have an unbearable cramp. My husband (who’s a doctor and is all too aware of the danger) and I have a contingency plan- in that unlikely event (knock on wood!!!), we’d immediately fly to Chicago to seek medical help. We are privileged in many ways: financially comfortable to afford such a trip at any moment and geographically close to an airport. But we can’t even begin to imagine what this could be like for a modest-income family in a remote region.
