How badly written are Awakening's characters really?

Ahem. Haar is a dynamic character without equal within Awakening. No character in Awakening shows the amount of character that he does. Tell me which character is inspired by the death of their commander and is driven to take revenge on their character. Tell me which character is deemed a superior fighter than most others but wishes only to live out his days carrying cargo. Haar. You could say he's lazy but you are forgetting MANY other characteristics by putting that blanket statement on him. He hates authority figures who abuse power, he sees no point in rising in ranks, despite the ability to do so, he isn't racist when others are, he has great respect for his teacher. You can't name a character in Awakening with a back story like Haars, and that's just one example. Many that you listed can be explored much more than a few sentences. The thing about Awakening is it was intentionally written with cliché characters to appeal to a wider audience. The is written to show these clichés, especially during the ending where everyone says something positive to MU. The characters most basic traits need to be shown in order for the player to understand them and make them seem in character. In addition, almost all characterization is done in supports, which are optional and players might not unlock them. Of course the Tellius series is gonna have better developed characters because of 1.) More game time than Awakening characters 2.) Info conversations, some of which are included for the sole purpose of characterization.

In short, Tellius characters are better written with less clichés because of more screen time and characterization. Awakenings characters were meant to be easy to follow. When you look at it like this, it starts to make a lot of sense why Tellius has some of the best characterization and Awakenings characters are picked to pieces because of how poorly written they are.
